Making sense of the numbers

What does Malaysia's API (IPU) number mean?

Malaysia's Air Pollutant Index (API), also called IPU, groups air quality into five categories. Higher numbers indicate poorer air quality. These categories apply to all readings on this page.

0–50Good

Outdoor activities are generally suitable for most people.

51–100Moderate

Most people can continue usual activities. Sensitive individuals should monitor symptoms.

101–200Unhealthy

Reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity. Higher-risk people should take extra care.

201–300Very unhealthy

Avoid unnecessary outdoor exertion. Higher-risk people should stay indoors where practical.

Above 300Hazardous

Avoid outdoor activities and follow official public-health advice.

Malaysia API vs IQAir AQI: why the readings differ

Malaysia's DOE publishes Malaysia API from official monitoring stations. IQAir displays a US AQI value that uses different calculation methods and monitoring sources. The systems are not directly interchangeable. BIG Pharmacy's map and table use Malaysia API throughout.

Can I still exercise outdoors?

Check your local reporting station. When API is above 100, reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor exercise. As readings increase, choose indoor activities or postpone your workout. Consider symptoms and existing health conditions even at lower readings.

Should I keep the windows closed?

During heavy haze, limit outdoor-air entry and avoid indoor smoking or burning. When outdoor air improves, ventilate your home to manage indoor pollutants and CO2. Do not keep your home sealed indefinitely.

Respiratory care

Well-fitting particulate respirators

Choose a suitably certified, properly fitted particulate respirator to help reduce exposure to fine airborne particles. Loose surgical masks are not equivalent to a well-fitting respirator.

Eye care

Lubricating eye drops

For dry or irritated eyes. Check product suitability if you wear contact lenses, have existing eye conditions or need preservative-free drops.

Throat care

Lozenges for throat comfort

Throat-care products may help ease irritation, but do not filter haze pollutants. Check the label for suitable ages and how to use.

Need help deciding? Well-fitting particulate respirators can reduce particulate exposure; eye drops, saline sprays and throat products provide symptom comfort rather than protection against haze particles. Follow product labels and consult a pharmacist when appropriate. If you use an asthma inhaler, continue your prescribed treatment or action plan.

Your questions, answered

Malaysia haze and API: frequently asked questions

Is it hazy today in Malaysia?

Check the latest available station readings above. Conditions vary by location, and observations may not be instantaneous. Verify your nearest station and its observation time on the official DOE APIMS dashboard.

What is the difference between API, IPU and AQI?

API stands for Air Pollutant Index. IPU is its Malay name, Indeks Pencemaran Udara. AQI is a more general term used by several other systems, including the US AQI used by IQAir. Here we display only Malaysia's API.

Why is IQAir's AQI different from Malaysia's DOE API?

Different calculations, pollutants, reporting networks and observation times can produce different numbers. US AQI and Malaysia API are not interchangeable. Compare readings only when their source, time and index standard are clear.

How can I check API near me?

Search for a state or monitoring station, expand a state in the table, or select Use my location. Location sharing is optional and identifies the nearest available reporting station; it does not measure the air at your exact address.

At what API should I stop running outdoors?

When API exceeds 100, reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor exercise, particularly if sensitive to pollution. If conditions worsen, consider indoor activity or postponement. Seek medical assessment for wheezing, breathlessness or chest discomfort.

Are surgical masks suitable for haze?

Loose surgical masks do not provide the same fine-particle protection as a properly fitted N95, KN95 or comparable certified particulate respirator. Protection depends on proper fit and the product's standard. Ask a pharmacist about suitability.

Should I leave windows closed during a haze episode?

Reduce entry of outdoor air when haze is severe. When conditions improve, ventilate your home as needed to manage indoor pollutants and carbon dioxide. Consider your home ventilation system.

What should I do if I have difficulty breathing during haze?

Move away from the exposure, and follow any prescribed asthma or respiratory action plan. Seek prompt medical assessment if symptoms worsen. Severe breathlessness or chest pain requires urgent medical attention.
