Vitamin D

Vitamin D Deficiency: Causes, Symptoms and Solutions

Vitamin D deficiency happens when the body does not have enough vitamin D, which can reduce calcium absorption and, in some cases, lead to low blood calcium levels that may affect bone health. Many people have no obvious symptoms at first, but prolonged or severe deficiency can contribute to weak bones, bone or muscle discomfort, and muscle weakness. In children, deficiency can cause rickets.

VITAMIN D

Common Causes of Vitamin D Deficiency in the Elderly

Older adults are more likely to have low vitamin D because the skin’s ability to synthesize vitamin D declines with age, many spend less time outdoors, and dietary intake may be low. Digestive conditions, kidney or liver problems, obesity, gastric bypass surgery and some medicines can also contribute to low vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D

Role of Vitamin D and Calcium in Elderly Fall Prevention

Vitamin D and calcium are important for bone health, while vitamin D also supports muscle function. Supplements may be useful for selected older adults, especially when vitamin D deficiency or low intake is present, but they are not a stand-alone way to prevent every fall. Strength and balance exercise, together with a review of medicines, vision and home hazards, remains essential.

VITAMIN D

What Is Vitamin D? Benefits, Sources and Why It Matters

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, supporting healthy bones and teeth as well as normal muscle function. Your body can make vitamin D when skin is exposed to UVB sunlight, and you can also get it from food and supplements. Severe deficiency can cause rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.

KIDS & TEENS

Are Today’s Teens Getting Enough Vitamin D?

Not always. Malaysian research shows that low vitamin D can be common in adolescents, although the exact percentage changes depending on the study population and the blood-level cut-off used. In the MyHeARTs study, 78.9% of 13-year-old had 25-hydroxyvitamin D below 50 nmol/L, with higher rates among girls and urban adolescents. A later Kota Bharu study using a lower cut-off of below 30 nmol/L reported 16.9% among healthy adolescents aged 13-18, so the two percentages should not be compared directly.

Pregnancy

The Role of Vitamin D in a Healthy Pregnancy

Living in a sunny country does not necessarily mean you are getting enough vitamin D. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and supports maternal bone health and the baby’s skeletal development during pregnancy. Getting enough vitamin D is important, but taking extra vitamin D does not necessarily prevent pregnancy complications.

Bone & Joint

Bone Pain or Joint Pain? How to Tell the Difference

Bone pain often feels deep, dull and localised within a bone, while joint pain is felt where two bones meet and may come with stiffness, swelling, warmth or pain with movement. The symptoms can overlap, so the feeling and location of pain alone cannot confirm the cause. Persistent, worsening or severe pain should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Joint Health and Aging: Tips for Staying Active as You Get Older

Staying active is an important way to support joint function and independence as you get older. Most adults aged 65 and above can aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days, and regular balance activities, while choosing appropriate activities for their fitness level, abilities and health conditions.
